Cracked nipples: how to cure them and home remedies

Cracks in the nipples arise especially during the first weeks of breastfeeding, and can be caused when the baby does not suck properly, resulting in small cracks and even bleeding in the nipples.

The treatment of cracked nipples can be done by applying a few drops of your own breast milk to the nipples, as this acts as a moisturizer, relieving the symptoms of dryness and burning. Likewise, the gynecologist or general practitioner may prescribe an ointment called lanolin, for example, to improve discomfort.

However, in mild cases, it is important that the woman does not stop breastfeeding, since breast milk provides the baby with nutrients and defenses against infections. In more severe cases, medical attention should be received to evaluate other breastfeeding options.
