[Día Mundial de la Salud Mental] Better understand the mind-body connection with advanced health research – Samsung Newsroom Mexico

Mental health affects almost every aspect of daily life, from physical health to relationships with friends, family and communities, as well as productivity at and outside of work. Despite the critical role that mental health plays in overall well-being, most available technologies focus on physical health. Samsung is committed to developing innovative health solutions for today and tomorrow, which is why it frequently collaborates with leading medical institutions and universities to advance advanced technologies and explore new possibilities in the field of health and wellness.

Joining World Mental Health Day (October 10), Samsung highlights ongoing research programs with Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT Media Lab, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, and Tulane University School of Medicine, Heart and Vascular Institute. These studies delve deeper into the mind-body connection by examining various health indicators, including depression, mood, resilience, and even cardiovascular disease, to offer more comprehensive and preventative health solutions for everyone.

Help prevent and detect depression with Massachusetts General Hospital

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is analyzing the correlation between depression and several biomarkers, using the Galaxy Watch smartwatch to evaluate the health metrics of 150 participants with different levels of depression. The study aims to validate correlations between depression and biometrics, such as participants’ biometric data patterns, as well as their activity level and sleep phase, duration and latency, both on weekends and weekdays. , to identify more detailed characteristics. The findings will be used to create a mental health index, which will allow users to better understand their mental state and take proactive measures.

Promote well-being by improving sleep quality with the MIT Media Lab

The MIT Media Lab has helped better understand the role sleep plays in well-being by linking sleep patterns to overall health. Nearly 200 university students participated in the study, who monitored their sleep over a month and evaluated themselves every morning with five indicators of well-being: level of attention, happiness, energy, health and relaxation. The study found strong associations between sleep and well-being, and both duration and regularity of sleep directly affected these indicators. Furthermore, using a MERF model (Mixed-Effects Random Forest), the MIT Media Lab was able to predict the levels of well-being shared by participants based on their sleep patterns, with a mean absolute error of 11 to 15 points on a 100-point scale, which was in close agreement with the results of their self-assessments . This result highlights the link between sleep and well-being, as well as the possibility of personalized assessment and management of well-being through the analysis of sleep patterns.

Help in quick recovery with Brigham & Women’s Hospital

Brigham & Women’s Hospital (BWH) is studying the relationship between biomarkers and an individual’s resilience, or how quickly they recover from major stressors. As a holistic measure, resilience captures both the body and mind’s ability to withstand major events such as illness and surgery. As a first use case, they are monitoring patients before, during and after undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) surgery. Galaxy Watch monitors participants’ lifestyle patterns and health conditions in real time, while data is automatically collected and analyzed using the Samsung Health Research Stack, a system designed to increase the efficiency and accuracy of large-scale research. . This study aims to obtain data on recovery and the ability to resist stressors, not only to help inform medical decisions, but also to help people understand how they can be prepared both mentally and physically for any adversity that may occur. emerge.

Identifying Cardiovascular Risks with Tulane University School of Medicine

Mental health has a proven relationship with reducing the risk of future cardiovascular diseases. Tulane University School of Medicine is using data from Galaxy Watch and Samsung Health SDK to create biomarkers for early detection of cardiovascular disease risk factors. The study will closely monitor thousands of participants from diverse demographic groups and areas of high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors for up to three years. Participants’ medical records and biometric data will then be analyzed to verify complex and interconnected health factors. Samsung and the Heart and Vascular Institute at Tulane hope to identify factors that impact cardiovascular disease, with the goal of developing algorithms for the prediction and prevention of specific cardiovascular diseases.

At Samsung, we are committed to supporting the healthcare community by unlocking new frontiers that were previously impossible to explore.”said Dr. Hon Pak, senior vice president and head of digital health team of MX Business at Samsung Electronics. That’s why we collaborate with leading medical institutions and accelerate research focused on the mind-body connection, using our sensor technology and joint expertise to deliver truly holistic and preventative health solutions.”.
