Mayor Ismael Burgueño participates in the Binational Committee to strengthen the relationship between Tijuana and San Diego


The Municipal President of Tijuana, Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, highlighted that the binational relationship between Tijuana and San Diego is a fundamental resource for the development and economic stability of the border region. This connection is based on an interdependence in various areas that drives progress on both sides of the border.

He commented on this when participating in the press conference as a member of the Binational Delegation in Mexico City, with the mission of promoting the relationship between Mexico and the United States and promoting key priorities for the success of the binational business community.

I predict great projects in the future, these three years in which I will be in charge of the public administration in Tijuana we have every will to generate these projects with an agenda that must be strict and permanently evaluated; and in that way build what has never been seen in history in this binational relationship between Tijuana and San Diego.

He also shared some relevant data that is the fundamental basis for promoting actions that increase development between Tijuana and San Diego; In this sense, he highlighted that the binational region generates an economic exchange of more than 275 million dollars annually between Mexico and the United States.

Dr. Ismael Burgueño indicated that, regarding jobs, it is estimated that more than 50 thousand people cross the border daily to work, which underlines the labor interdependence of the region, and what makes it the busiest border in the world. .

Likewise, he said that the border crossing between San Ysidro and Tijuana is the busiest in the world with approximately more than 70 million crossings, while Otay Mesa is one of the main ports of entry for land trade.

This border dynamic is crucial for Tijuana, as Americans visit the city not only for entertainment, but also to receive medical treatments, such as bariatrics and dentistry, among others. This highlights the importance of Tijuana in the medical tourism sector.

Burgueño Ruiz highlighted the following on the subject:

Tijuana is a leading destination in medical tourism, attracting around 2.4 million medical tourists per year, many from San Diego and other places in the United States, generating more than 800 million dollars per year.

Strengthening ties: challenges and opportunities in the Tijuana-San Diego relationship

The Municipal President, Ismael Burgueño, also highlighted the importance of security and cooperation, pointing out that both regions face common challenges. For this reason, we are working in coordination with the federal and state governments, as well as in a close binational relationship, to develop specific and clear strategies that strengthen this area. In addition, it announced an investment in technology and intelligence to further improve the security scheme.

Other important topics in which Tijuana and San Diego converge are manufacturing and technology, cultural exchange and entertainment, educational and research, migration and mobility, as well as sustainability and the environment.

Given the proximity of this binational area, Burgueño highlighted that San Diego and Tijuana not only share residents and tourists, but are also united by a vibrant cultural life, reflected in various binational events and festivals.

Mayors Todd Gloria and Ismael Burgueño join forces to strengthen the Cali-Baja relationship

The mayor of San Diego, Todd Gloria, was also part of the binational delegation, it was during his statement in which he reinforced the importance of the Cali-Baja relationship, where both territories form a border megaregion through which thousands of people live, work and move daily through the ports of entry. After his participation, the mayor of Tijuana, Dr. Ismael Burgueño commented:

I appreciate the willingness of the Mayor of San Diego, Todd Gloria, the time and spaces that we have given ourselves to collaborate, dialogue and mainly put together this great binational agenda and thus strengthen these projects on the border.

This mission is promoted by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, from October 20 to 23 and more than 100 authorities and business and community leaders from San Diego and Baja California participate.

Ismael Burgueño, previous efforts for an effective binational agenda

Prior to this week’s Binational Committee, the mayor of Tijuana, Ismael Burgueño, was carrying out important efforts to lay the foundations for a cooperation agenda between Mexico and the United States. In the previous days, he met with various San Diego authorities to discuss the challenges facing the border, as well as the opportunities for collaboration that could arise.

One of these meetings was with Mariza Marín, Director of US Customs and Border Protection, in which key areas were identified, such as streamlining border crossings and the use of advanced technology at entry points.
