The future of health in Spain through HR management

Human Resources Forum, Valor Salud and Capital Radio could not be missing from the IV HR and Health Congress organized by CEOE and Fundación Global Salud. A reference event that grows year after year to address the challenges faced by the Spanish health system from the prism of people management. The program traveled to the Carlos Ferrer Salat room at the CEOE headquarters in Madrid, with Francisco García Cabello at the helm, to know first-hand where the solutions go through with the help of its protagonists.

Carlos Rus, president of ASPEwas the perfect host and gladly attended us to offer his impressions about a day with which “we were surprised once again” by the large presence of institutional representatives and human resources management of the main private hospital groups.

Although he has regretted that “from an ideological point of view, what is private is not liked, it is not interesting”, he celebrates that in this Congress there is participation from the public sector such as the Minister of Health of the Canary Islands or the general director of Professional Regulation of the Ministry of the Interior. A sample of «the will that the private always has» to collaborate.

Going into assessing the evolution of Human Resources in Healthcare, he pointed out that the Covid-19 pandemic “has been a driving force, a kind of time machine. Suddenly there have been things that were landing, it seemed like they were going to land and they have definitely landed. Hence it stands out that “we are growing”: “When the health sector gets going, it moves much faster than any otherbecause our rhythm is permanently urgent and non-stop.

José Ignacio Nieto and Antonio Burgueño, our reference colleagues, did not want to miss this appointment with HR and Health. The former Minister of Health of La Rioja valued that of this Congress «you have to draw good conclusions and above all you have to take measures in some way. We are seeing problems, we are seeing that there are solutions, in some places they are fixed better and faster than others. But I think we lack cruising speed a little bit.”

The director of the Venturi Project, for his part, highlighted the evolution since the first Congress was held until now: «This evolution, which can best be told by professionals in much more detail, is what is perceived. We are going more, we are learning, we are improving and we know how to do many more things«.

Olga Ginés, president of the ASPE Human Resources Commission, also attended Valor Salud, and commented that in this edition “we are going into detail about what healthcare organizations are doing to be able to face the serious risk we have of a shortage of professionals.” . «We have talked about training, we have talked about recognition, we have talked about retention, we have given specific projects that are helping us to alleviate this shortage of professionals«, he summarized.

Salvador Sanchís, Director of People at Ribera Health and moderator of one of the Congress round tables, highlighted that “I don’t miss any of the actors that need to be there. And more and more people are talking about human resources, because I think it is becoming more and more relevant when we talk about the health sector. And I think it is fundamental. It catches my attention a lot, and I also feel proud of it, that today Let’s talk about many things related to the field of people management at a health congress and let’s put it in the center of people.

Montse Planelles, director of Human Resources at IMED Hospitalshas told about the program that he has presented in Congress on “qualification of managers in skills and competencies that make them safer, more reliable in the leadership part.” Furthermore, he pointed out that by 2025 “we have to stop talking about a lack of professionals. We have to start talking about what we contribute as private healthcare“What we contribute to society and value ourselves so that people choose us, so that people come.”

Representatives of some of the companies promoting the event also participated. Jordi Albalate, CEO of Human Resources Criteriavalued the exhibition of real good practiceswith concrete examples of what you are doing. “They also give us ideas to improve our value proposition.”

Carlos Pardo, CEO of SD Worxhighlighted the fact of seeing “how people, how professionals, are convinced that people management must be improved and that People management is what will lead us to treat patients much better. So, for me this is being a boost of positive energy.” He also pointed out that his company tries to provide “flexibility” to the health sector to help attract talent.

Petra Moreno, director of CursosFnn Group in FNNpointed out that Congress has had “a very high level.” From its organization it is committed to training “always trying to contribute from our extensive knowledge of the health system and organizations, both public and private.”

The main challenge that the sector faces at the training level is that of «focus on professional development, attracting and retaining talent» contributing «to favor, to improve, to accompany organizations in the professional development of health professionals, trying to some extent to be one more point than making these organizations attractive through training.»
